Copyright

What is Copyright?

Copyright is a legal concept, giving the creator of an original piece of work exclusive rights to control its distribution, for a certain time period.

Copyright may apply to a wide range of creative, intellectual, or artistic forms, or "works" and can include novels, instruction manuals, computer programs and databases, published editions of works, artistic works, sound recordings, films, videos and broadcasts.

Why copyright your work?

There are two good reasons…

1.    The copyright is owned by the creator of the work.  Remember, if you commission a design project (for example), then the copyright will be with the creator of the work and not automatically with you.

2.    Owning the copyright gives you control of and ensures you profit from your creation.  A copyright not only protects with "the right to copy", but it also gives the owner other privileges such as: credit for the work; to determine who may adapt the work to other forms; who may perform the work; who may financially benefit from it; and other related rights.
