UK Registered Designs

A registered design provides monopoly rights in the article for up to twenty five years upon the payment of renewal fees every five years.

The design can be in any article as long as it satisfies two criteria:

It must:
1. be new and novel
2. possess individual character

What can be covered by a registered design?

1. any industrial or handicraft item
2. parts intended to be assembled into a complex product
3. packaging, get up (trade dress)
4. graphic symbols and typographical typefaces

It is possible to secure design registration for an article if the application is submitted within twelve months within the date on which the article was first disclosed.

After a United Kingdom registered design application has been filed, it is possible to file corresponding design applications in other jurisdictions within six months from the date of the United Kingdom application.
