International Trade Mark RegistrationThe Madrid Protocol is an extremely cost effective method to secure International protection in member states at a cost that would be substantially less than by securing individual national registrations. In recent years a number of major countries have become signatories. This includes the United States, China, Japan, Australia and the European Community. With such major trading groups having joined, this is providing encouragement to others. There is no doubt that the usefulness of the International registration system will continue to evolve as a valued part of an overall strategy for trade mark protection. The system is administered centrally from the World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO) in Geneva, Switzerland. The system requires the existence of a national application or registration in a member country and allows for the designation of any other participating countries. The Community trade mark is a single designation. We would be happy to advise as to how this system can be an effective part of your filing strategy.
